The Naked Dance

The Naked Dance is a solo dance piece that explores my own relationship with my body. Since I was a child, I've been told that I am "Too skinny" or that "I need to eat more" because I am a naturally thin male. This definitely had an effect on my own body image. I compared myself to others and was always sensitive about being thin. We need to recognize that bodies come in all different shapes and sizes. There is no one “right” body size. Your body is not and should not be exactly like anyone else’s. In this piece, I try to explore my body as a facet of my uniqueness and individuality. My body size, shape, or weight does not determine my worth as a person or my identity as a man. In other words, I am not just my body. Expand your idea of “masculinity” to include qualities such as sensitivity, cooperation, caring, patience, having feelings, being artistic. Some men may be muscular and athletic, but these qualities in and of themselves do not make a person a “man.”
